Celebrity Inspired Wedding Hair Styles

I was sent an article about celebrity inspired wedding hairstyles and trends and decided to share. No wedding attire is complete without the right hairstyle and even this can be a daunting task.

Inspired by some of our favorite Hollywood starlets who have tied the knot this year, Latrice Strader, Master Hairstylist and Owner of Destiny De’Ve Hair Salon in Washington, D.C. explores the bridal styles of five celebrity newlyweds who mastered their wedding day hairstyles.
“This year the top celebrity bridal hairstyles each exuded a look of elegance and grace while maintaining a glamorous edge,” says Latrice. Whether you are looking for a classic, glamorous, or sexy bridal hairstyle, the hairstyles below will surely suit your fancy for your special day.
Latrice explains how every woman can find the celebrity bridal hairstyle that fits them best.

Regal beauty:
America’s favorite first daughter tied the knot in a beautiful dress and ceremony, in addition to a classic feminine French twist. “The twists and braids are perfect for Chelsea since she is young, vibrant, and is a part of American royalty” says Latrice. “For any bride desiring a classic look with a lot of volume and texture, this French twist is a top bridal hairstyle—perfect for any princess fairytale wedding” Latrice continues.

Foxy and simple:
Transformers star Megan Fox shows off her shiny jet-black hair on her big day by keeping it straight and simple for her wedding. “Straight hair is definitely a sexy way to highlight natural beauty,” says Latrice. “For any bride who desires a sexier and more natural look, straight hair is the perfect hairstyle” Latrice continues.
Gold, Elegant Waves:
Khloe Kardashian’s perfectly crimped locks are highlighted by her luscious golden highlights for her big day. Khloe’s gold streaks bring out her glowing fair skin as well. “Gold and/or deep brown highlights are a great way to highlight your natural skin tone if you have naturally dark hair,” says Latrice. “Shades of lighter colors for those with naturally lighter hair can also bring out beautiful glowing skin as well.”
All-American girl updo:
Carrie Underwood’s beautiful smile and voice aren’t the only things touching hearts all around the nation. Carrie’s golden tresses are gathered into an elegant updo with loose curls that are easy to work with. “Carrie’s side swoop bangs complement her loose curls perfectly and add a fun yet beautiful look to her style,” says Latrice.
Fit for a queen:
Grammy award winning Alicia Keys continues to set trends even on her wedding day. Incorporating a diamond encrusted tiara with an elegant chignon tucked and pinned away from her face, Alicia exudes a regal look on her big day. “Alicia’s beauty is radiant with this simple yet glamorous hairstyle,” says Latrice. “It’s a super chic and classic look that highlights her beauty well, especially with the added touch of the tiara.”

How to choose the best flat iron

There's so much contradictory advice and information out there about straightening irons.
How wide should it be?
What is ceramic plated and does it work?
What are tourmaling crystals?
What characteristics to look out for?
Which is better? Chi - Ghd - Or another brand?
Check out this Youtube video and review from one of my newly discovered make up guru's - who has previous experience working at a salon.

Heat-free way to get gorgeous curls and volume

Here's a tutorial for achieving lovely curls without heat. I stumbled onto it since I don't own a curling iron yet. Plus I try to avoid heat-styling my hair unless there's some special ocassion.

All you will need are:
-Slightly damp hair
-A bunch of bobby pins
-A little hairspray
-Blowdryer with "No Heat" setting (I think this is optional).

Home-made: High Protein Scalp Conditioner

This is a home made recipe I got from Thriftyfun.com. Check it out for some more home made hair miracles.:)

This high-protein, all-natural hair conditioner will help to dislodge any debris or pollution that may be clogging the tiny openings in your scalp. This conditioner will open the tiny openings for better passage of nutrients into your hair. This scalp conditioner also enriches the hair, helping to make it stronger and more lustrous.

Blend together, preferably in an electric blender:
1 cup fresh skimmed milk
1 egg yolk (separated from the egg white)
2 capsules of wheat germ oil contents (you may have to open up capsules and squeeze the contents out)
1 Tbsp. of fresh wheat germ
The contents of 1 Tbsp. of lecithin granules (you may need to open capsules)
1 Tbsp. natural wheat bran (available in bulk also)

Note: You may find all of the above ingredients at a health food store. It is unlikely that your local grocery store will carry most of the ingredients other than the milk and eggs.
Slowly and firmly massage the mixture into your scalp. Leave the mixture on for about 10 minutes. If you cover your head with a shower cap or you drape a towel around your head and lie on a slant board while the conditioner does its work, you will benefit even more because of the gravity effect. After 10 minutes, thoroughly rinse the conditioner from your hair with warm (not hot) water. Follow with your usual shampoo and conditioner.

Easy hair style: build volume while you sleep

This is more for those of you with straight/wavy hair who want to add a kick of volume. I'm usually too busy  when I first wake up and have to rush to work/class. So I decided to take a tip from Heidi Klum's stylist and get a red-carpet worthy look... while I sleep!
All you do is spray your hair with volumizing spray before you get some shut eye. Create some braids at your nape, crown and bangs. Flipping hair over adds more volume. Then fasten the braids in a bun at the top of your head.

Come morning: voila! Just shake down your braids and you're set to go. They're also pretty comfy to sleep in.

Easy, Messy Hair Updo/Hairstyle

I love this idea. Great for days when you're having a bad hair day, or just want to try out a new look for an ocassion.

Tips For Shiny Hair

Here are some tips I put together for those of you who want to get shinier, better looking hair.

  • DRY HAIR: Mix mehandi/henna powder , coconut milk and coconut oil to get a paste. Apply it to your hair and massage gently. Leave it for one hour. Then wash your hair to get shiny silky hair. It also prevents hair fall. Do this twice a week.

  • For black hair: Dry curry leaves for one day (in the sun), heat coconut oil and add dried curry leaves to it. Leave the oil for one day. Now its ready for use. For health hair add curry leaves to your food. (My dad actually read about this and recommended this for people who are trying to stop their hair from falling excessively!)
  • Use Strawberry hair mask: mash eight strawberries with one-tablespoon mayonnaise. Massage this into washed but damp hair. Cover it with a shower cap and then a warm towel. Wash out with a shampoo and then condition. It's meant to give your mane a glossy sheen.
  • For blonde hair use a few tablespoons of lemon juice to your rinse water. This will make your hair shiny.
  • For brown and red hair add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to your rinse water.
  • For shiny hair you can also mix one teaspoon of honey into 4 cups of warm water. After shampooing, pour the mixture through your hair, but do not rinse. Dry as normal.

Victoria's new pixie hair cut

Victoria Beckham debuted a spiky new pixie cut at the Marc Jacobs Spring 2009 show at Fashion Week. I haven't really covered any bits of fashion week but that's because pretty much every other blogger has and I didn't want to blog about the same topics.
During the past year Victoria introduced the angled bob trend which was seen on everyone and their mother. This time she's gone shorter and edgier. Still sexy as usual.

What Do You Think Of Victoria Beckham’s new Pixie Cut? Was it better before?

How to straighten curly hair

This guide is probably the BEST I have seen so far. I usually use a flat iron on my hair, and to be honest, the next day my hair needs to be straightend again.
So as you can see I'm a newbie when it comes to straightning. I think though that if you buy a high quality (a.k.a. expensive) straightner, you can pretty much skip the blowdrying.
The flat iron I own is from Conair, and I gotta be honest, I would give it a 3 out of 5 rating. It's not bad, but I've used my cousins GED, and that baby left my hair straight for a whole week!!

So here is a well explained video tutorial for all of you looking to get sleek, sexy hair which will last till your next wash.

You'll need:
a blowdryer,
flat iron (I recommend VO5 Miracle mist),
mousse,
flat iron spray,
sillicone syrum.

Hair: Fall 2008 trend

The current look seen all over runways this Fall is the unfussy/beachy look. Whowhatweardaily.com was kind enough to do an easy video tutorial about achieving the (what I call:p) "sex hair" look.
I'm kinda also noticing a trend in my last posts: it's alot about messy grunge and rock and roll..

Kim Kardashian Dishes Beauty Advice

I just found out that Kim Kardashian has her own blog now. I've visited her site before but never realized she personally updated it. I'm way more impressed by this then the DASH online store to be honest. .
I love her make up- specially now that she has decided to tone down the make up- and there seems to be some really useful tips on the blog e.g. "how to get hot hair." She answers fans questions, updates on her sisters, life, rumors, etc. Not bad at all! =)

Another interesting tidbit I read is that she, her mom and sibling have been using "Revitalash." (the darn thing does cost $150 though!)
Ruby asks:
Kim, do you where eye lash extensions? I am so amazed by how long and perfect your eye lashes always appear... not to mention that both your sisters and mom also have the same perfect look.

No, I do not wear eyelash extensions, Ruby. But just started using an eyelash grower called Revitalash. It's amazing! It makes your eyelashes grow soooo much!

She also recommends switching up shampoos and conditioners so your hair doesn't get used to same products. This is what keeps her hair shiny, bouncy and vibrant.

Other useful entries quoted from her blog:

We really want to know what bra's you use???? I have tried a number of different bras... the best thing to good support and lift (I've found... 34c) is Victoria Secret's convertible push up... and the angel invisible, underwire is okay too. But I find they squeeze me a little too much for my liking... can't stand it all day... what is the secret!!

I am obsessed with Victoria's Secret. I wear the water bra! It is the best ever! I’m also going to get fitted properly. There is a great woman in New York who does this but I know they also have fit specialists at Victoria’s Secret too — most women wear the wrong size bra!

Coconut Oil And Hair

Coconut oil is one of the best natural sources of nutrition for hair. It helps in aid in healthy hair growth providing extra shine. Regular scalp/head massages with coconut oil is said to keep scalp free of dandruff and other annoying ailments, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. So it's no wonder it's also used in conditioners and dandruff relief treatments.

Directions:
Evenly run fingers through hair and rub oil into hair. Using a comb to distribute evenly is also possible, but massaging your hair with help stimulate blood circulation helping hair to grow a bit faster. Usually, I put it on dry hair at night before, go to bed and put a small towel over my pillowcase. Then in the morning I wash it out with shampoo. Some people have even reported thicker, stronger hair after using it. And I may just start using it more regularly to lessen hair falling out, which is natural- but is always nice to reduce.

Here are some other picks for natural home made remedies using coconut oil:
For Dandruff.
  • Apply the warm mixture of olive oil, lemon juice and coconut oil. Do a steam -towel- wrap for 15 minutes and wash the hair with a shampoo.
For Healthy and Shiny hair
  • It is better to apply castor oil for a healthy growth of hair.
  • Wash hair with tea once in a week.
  • Soak a handful of gooseberry in a cup of milk for two hours. Make it as a paste and apply in the hair.
  • Apply the mixture of an egg white, 2 spoons of castor oil, 1 spoon glycerin, in the scalp and hair. Wash it after some time.
  • Massage hair with warm coconut oil an hour before washing. Let it soak. Cover your head with a hot towel and wash your hair after an hour or so.
  • Boil a few hibiscus flowers in coconut oil. Filter and use this hair oil to control hair loss and thinning.
  • Do a 'steam-towel-wrap' once in a while, if your cuticles are damaged, as this steaming opens out the pores and absorbs the oil.
  • Deep condition with curd, beer and egg.
  • Mix a little vinegar in warm water and rinse your hair with this solution. This will add bounce to dull and lifeless hair.

How To Get Super Straight Hair

Smooth, pin-straight hair begins with blow-drying strands.

1. After detangling your damp hair, apply a heat-protecting product from roots to ends, then separate your hair into several sections (the thicker and curlier the hair, the smaller the sections should be).
I just bought a heat-protecting product: V05 new! Miracle Mist which can be used with flat irons OR blow dryers and basically you just spray it on from the bottle.

2. Clip up the top and middle sections, and add a concentrator nozzle to the dryer.

3. Blow-dry one small section of the bottom layer at a time, beginning at the roots, working toward the ends, and gripping each section firmly with a good paddle or round brush. It’s important to get the roots, keep the tension consistent, and keep the nozzle pointed downward to avoid frizzy and static hair.

4. After the underside is dry, use the same technique for the middle and finally the top layers. At this point, you can flatiron your hair for an even straighter look, again working in small sections and keeping the iron moving to reduce the risk of damage.

After a few practice runs, you’ll be finishing like the pros!

Rihanna's New Hair Style

Thursday Rihanna rocked a newly cut, dyed and styled hair-do as she lit up the Empire State Building for Cartier Love Day. Thank god Miss Mushroomhead ditched the "bowl cut" she had been recently sporting. I am glad to say she is looking her usual stylish self again after coloring her hair brown/red do as apposed the the usual black color; I wasn't really feeling her style lately (not only when it comes to hair do.. anyone seen the "cop outfit" she wore on the Red Carpet??)

Here you can see her sporting a bubble hem dress, hot Louboutin Trottinette ankle boots and an oh-so-fab Cartier diamond hair brooch.
Me like-eee!

Faking A Bob

Forget faking O's, the new it thing is faking bobs!

After going thru so many pics of Posh Spice and Rihanna with their sexy short hair I've been toying with the idea of copying them. But let's be real... I'm not ready to give up my long locks yet after spending years trying to grow out.

I love the idea of recreating the new fake bob trend that was all over the Emmys red carpet in the fall and also modeled on the runways at Derek Lam's spring collection. Stars like Penelope Cruz and especially Eva Longoria are just a few faking bobs.

To get this look, curl hair in rollers or with a curling iron, then pin underneath. It may take some practicing and some heavy-duty styling spray if you have stick-straight hair.

Here are more detailed instructions:
1. Apply quite a bit of mousse- roots to ends- so your hair has a lot of texture (less slippage once pinned up).
2. Blow it very dry and somewhat straight, then set it in rollers or pin curls.
3. Let them cool, take them out, and brush your hair until it’s big and poofy.
4. Gather it into a loose, low pony, twist it into a bun, and tuck the bun under your hair so you don’t see it anymore.
5. Your hair should poof up around it to look like a bob; once it looks right, pin the bun in place and pull more hair over it.
6. The final (obvious) step: strong-hold hairspray!
Hopefully I’ll find time to try my own “bob” soon and post photos for you!

P.s.: A trick that may make this easier for those with impossibly straight, slippery hair is to tease the bottom section of your hair (the part that's going to be twisted up into a bun). This combined with alot of hairspray will help your hair stay in place.
It's also essential that you have layers that you can pull out in order to camouflage the parts that have been pinned up.

Homemade Deep Hair Conditioner

As I promised I will be posting tried and tested home made recipes with ingredients you can easily find in your kitchen. Not to mention you save money while getting spectacular results, minus the harsh chemicals. Most of these recipes need to be refrigerated since they don't contain preservatives (-shelf life is approximately 1 week).

Today recipe: "Avocado & Mayo deep conditioner" which will leave your hair soft and shiny.
Avocados contain vitamin B6 & vitamin E, and mayonaisse is loaded with Vitamin K.
As you know Vitamin E is vital for moisturizing and restoring dry or overprocessed hair. It's recommended to use a deep hair conditioner at least 2 times a month.

Ingredients:
plain mayonnaise
1/2 an avocado

Instructions:Put together the mayonaise and avocado in a bowl and squish them together with your hands other utensil till the whole mixture looks minty green.
Smooth it all over your hair- all the way to the tips. (If you have oily or fine hair, my hairstylist said to never apply any conditioner on your scalp. Avoid the scalp but apply it to the rest of your hair.) Put on a shower cap or wrap your head with saran wrap and leave it on for 20 minutes.

For deeper conditioning put a hot, damp towel around your head -over the saran wrap.

For really long hair: you only really need deep conditioning at the ends so cut the ingredients in half and apply only to the ends and just wrap them.

Get A Bob Like Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham a.k.a. Posh Spice has proven to be a real trendsetter. She now even has a hair-do named after her which is popping up everywhere. Meet the "Pob" (Posh Spice + Bob= Pob). The bob has been around for years, but I don't recall it being as hot as it is right now.
She truly added her twist to it and reinvented this timeless style. This striking asymmetrical short cut is a combination of sleek and ophisticated, yet and funky/messy.

Find a skilled stylist who is comfortable with texturizing via straight razor first. Discuss with your hairdresser what aspects of the cut will suit you, and where things should be adapted to be most flattering to your face shape and styling skills.

These asymmetrical bobs, have been spotted on stars such as Rihanna and now even Katie Holmes. The fabulousness of hairstyle is that it can be uniquely tailored to suit each woman’s facial features and hair type- Fine hair gets quite a lift this way and heavy, thick locks get a weight lifted out..
In fact, Posh Spice, herself, has changed up the look of her Pob various times since she first donned it. The first version look more like the classic bob with a twist on the angle (short in back, long in front). Now, the back of her head is more of a shag with shorter texturized layers. With a few minor adjustments anyone can look as trendy and stylish as Mrs. Beckham.

This cut is meant to move hair forward, framing the face to the point of almost obscuring features with the sultry way the hair falls in the eyes.

Tips for styling the Pob:
***Use a texturizing shampoo and conditioner in the shower.

***Towel dry your hair and work in a small amount of anti-frizz balm and a dollop of volumizing mousse through your hair.

***Using your hair dryer and a round brush, smooth hair towards your face, boosting more movement in your hair.

***To style a cowlick, try blasting the heat on the unruly piece of hair first in one direction, then in the next direction, and after repeating a few times, the hair should sit the way you want.

***Once dry, use a bit of pomade or wax to spike up the shorter pieces and seperate longer strands. Use a small amount and rub between your hands to get the product soft, warm and pliable.

***When your hair is styled, finish off with a touch of glossy shine serum and a spritz of finishing spray. Throughout the day you can touch and fluff up your hair.

***Shorter styles usually require a bit more maintenance than longer ones. You'll need to get regular trims every 4-6 weeks, and keep that color fresh as there is nowhere for roots to hide.

***You won't need to wash your hair everyday as choppier styles usually hold up well with slightly dirty hair.

Or check out this step by step awesome video about "the Pob"I found online! It includes everything from cutting and coloring to styling... Let me know what you think. :)

What Haircut Suits My Face?

Even though you may love the latest celebrity hair style, it might not be the right hair style for your face. The shape of your face and the proportions of your features can help determine what style would be best suited for you.

It's hard to be objective about your own face shape, but here's a sure fire way to be sure your not biasing your own analysis. Hair designers are the ultimate judges of your face shape, but if you need a little help try this experiment--->
To find out the shape of your face, by measuring it with a tape measure or ruler:
  • Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones. Write down the measurement on a piece of paper.
  • Measure across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point. Write down the measurement.
  • Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Generally the widest point will be somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline. Write down the measurement.
  • Measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your
    chin.

Oval-shaped face:
You're lucky - this is the kind of face shape that suits just about any hairstyle. Both long and short hair cuts look great on you, as your face shape is well balanced. The chin and forehead of an oval face shape are in even proportion.
Avoid covering up your perfect face shape with heavy bangs or wearing your hair on your face. You'll lose your face shape and it may add weight to your face.

Round face:
Hairstyles with fullness and height at the crown will give the impression of a narrower face. Try a cut with layers while keeping the sides close to your face to make your face appear longer. Round faces suit either short hairstyles swept back from your forehead, or hairstyles that are longer than chin length. Wispy fringes and side parts are also good.
Avoid chin length hair, center parts, fullness at the sides of ears, straight "chopped bangs - these wll all emphasise the shape of your face.
Putting a side part in the hair will slim and lengthen a face that's too round.

Heart-shaped face:The heart shaped face is widest at the temples and narrowest at the chin, which can appear pointy. Short hair and chin length hair often looks great on this face shape, as the fullness can even out the jaw and chin lines. Chin length bobs, short shags, swept forward layers and wispy bangs all work well. Long hair with fullness at the chin will balance a narrow chin.
Avoid full styles that emphasise the upper face without balancing out your narrow chin. Too much height at the crown and tapered necklines will make you look top heavy.

Rectangular, Long face:
If your face is long and slender, with your forehead and below cheeks about the same width, hairstyles that balance out the length of your face work best for you. These include short to medium lengths with fullness/curles at the sides and soft wispy bangs. This will shorten the length and add width to your face. Layered styles work well and add softness to the straight lines of your face.
Avoid too much length, it will only make your face look longer. Too much height will also lengthen your face.

Square face:
If your face is square, with a strong, square jaw line and often an equally square hairline, the right hairstyles for you are ones that soften the square look of your face. Short to medium length hair cuts, with soft wispy bangs and a wave or curl will compliment and balance out your straight face shape. If you hair is straight, maybe consider a body wave. Side parts and fullness/height at the crown can add length to your square face shape.
Avoid straight styles - long straight hair, blunt bangs, straight bobs and center parts, as they will emphasise your square jawline.

Triangle face:
If you face is triangle, with a wider chin that narrows at the forehead, you want to stick to styles that narrow your chin and widen the forehead. This will balance out your features. Shorter hair can often balance our your prominent jaw line, as well as styles that are full at the temples that taper at the jaw. Off center parts, wedges and shags are also good styles for you. Lots of layers will give you the fullness through the upper part of your face.
Avoid Styles that are full at the jawline and center parts.

Full forehead, long chin:
If your forehead is large and your chin long, it can help to add volume below the chin line to balance it out. A thick layered cut or mid-length bob will add fullness where it's needed. Bangs can also reduce the look of a full forehead.

Large features:
Full hair or upswept crown can help downplay a large nose or other feature and can help balance out large features. Straight hair, parted down the middle or a long, heavy fringe will make a larger nose seem even more prominent. Subtle highlights in your hair can help by drawing the eye towards the hair and away from the face.

Long or short neck:
A long, graceful neck is a beautiful and desireable feature and should be shown off and considered when choosing a hairstyle. Short hair can really show off your neck, however long hair can also add to your already graceful neck when worn in an elegant style, like a twist or updo. If you want a short hairstyle and your neck is short, create the appearance of length by tapering your hair at the base of the neck and fuller on top.

Sharp, Angular Features
A wavy or curly hairstyle will soften a chiseled cheekbone, nose or jaw.

High forehead:
A horizontal line of full bangs can cover the forehead, balancing the face.

Low Forehead:
Vertical lines and soft fullness at the crown can lengthen the face.
