Featured guest blog post- Laddered tights How to wear fishnet tights

Here's Laddered tights advice on wearing fishnet tights. Click on the above picture to vist her blog or the link at the bottom.

Yesterday I posted that I was going to start a new feature on the blog so here is the first installment.

A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted and asked for some advice and my opinion on fishnet tights. I do actually own a pair of them but I’ve only ever worn them for Halloween and a fancy dress gig. I think that they can be quite difficult to wear if you don’t feel confident enough to wear them and I think that, for a lot of people, is because of the negative connotations that fishnet tights have attached to them sometimes. I don’t think that’s the case though.
I’ve found some images of a couple of celebrities who pull off the look.

I’m not a massive Rihanna fan but I really like her outfit here. A simple LBD with statement shoulders teamed with the boots give the look a quirky Rihanna-spin and I think she looks great.

Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen matches her fluorescent skirt with her lipstick and the biker style boots and leather jacket adds to her rock chick look.

Kaya Scodelario’s character in Skins, Effy, often wears her fishnet tights as her style is very edgy and also quite the rock chick style. Effy goes for the “less is more” approach and I personally, love her style.

There is some celebrity influence for you but I put together a couple of outfits too so you know that it’s not just people with a lot of money that can wear them!
(note; just ignore the hole and ladder in my tights!)
Black vest top, Ethel Austin; Denim shorts, New Look, Military boots, Wardrobe
Firstly, I actually really like this outfit and I may have to wear it out sometime soon. Secondly, the rips in the tights sort of add to this look I think and makes it a bit more edgy and a little Taylor Momsen-esque.
Black vest top, as before; Heeled studded boots, Matalan
An easy way to turn a casual day outfit into a night outfit. My vest top is really quite long so it can be worn as a dress and then just add some heels and you’re away! I wore shoes with studs on to keep the whole edgy-ness appeal.
Black vest top, as before; Denim shorts, as before; Purple tights, Ethel Austin
Some people may not be overly confident with just fishnets so I came up with a solution to that… wearing them on top of coloured tights!

I actually wore them like this for the fancy dress gig I went to the other year (The Hoosiers if you are wondering) but I can’t find any photos for you.

I hope this has helped in some way. If there’s anything you would like me to feature on “How to wear…” then do leave a comment or email me. Much appreciated.

How To Wear Fishnet Tights

How To Wear Fishnet Tights

by Tegan McRae

I love fishnet tights. I think they’re versatile, and can be edgy, classy, or fun depending on the rest of the outfit. But to most, they carry that essence of ‘trashy’ as in movies and shows, every prostitute or stripper is wearing a pair. No longer, I say! Gorgeous fishnet leg wear should be celebrated for it’s unique look! But how to wear it?

Don’t Wear It To The Office. Especially a conservative one. No matter how well its being worn with an outfit, it just usually isn’t professional looking. If you really want to, make sure very little of it shows, unless your employer finds it appropriate.
Do Pick A Smaller Netting. The wider the holes, the less elegant and put-together the tights will look. Pick a close knit style, or even a different shape . Many chain stores like Forever21 carry different styles.
Don’t Make Them The Main Attraction. Whether the style you’re going for is rocker-chic, subtly sexy, casually flirty, or all-out sexpot, don’t make the fishnets the focus of your outfit. For instance, pairing fishnets with a plain, black dress is not going to give your outfit any style, since the main part is your fishnets which don’t have a set fashion statement. Adding booties, a studded belt, and big earrings will draw the entire outfit together though.
Do Realize That Footwear Makes The Outfit. In the case of fishnets, that is. Stay away from anything open toe (squished toes being strapped with strings? No thanks), and ‘busy shoes’ with lots of lace, strings, studs, or designs (combined with fishnets, it’ll look chaotic). Do embrace boots, flats, and heels depending on the look you want.
Still unsure? Take a look at these:
fishnets1
Closing the wide gap between the hemline of your skirt and where your shoes start is easily fixed with a just-by-the-knee skirt and calf high boots. Fishnets turn this otherwise average outfit into a perfect Saturday night ensemble.
fishnets2
Add a little punk look with studs to make your fishnets blend it. Stay current with fashion by keeping your accessories elegant and chic.
fishnets3
Classy with fishnets, yes! While a lot of them are exposed here, it’s impossible for them to seem ‘trashy’ with so many elegant pieces. Stay away from heavy patterns to avoid a too-busy outfit.

Is it ok to wear fishnet tights in an office ?

Following on from the article above which does offer some sound advice, i found these answers on a question site to the above question which make for some interesting reading. In my opinion there is no reason whats so ever why you wouldn't wear fishnets to the office, iv'e seen it done and do it myself on a regular basis. Food for thought. Feel free to comment

I would say no to wearing them in an office environment but if you're adventurous then it shouldn't be a problem. Fishnet and lovely shoes are a winning combination. A good guideline is to wear what they wear a few rungs up from you especially if youre on the promotion list but this obviously lacks any individuality. If you want to follow office trends then do so and if not thats your choice too. No one should be judged by the clothes they wear but it happens all the time.

It really depends on how you wear them, as an accent to an otherwise fairly demure ensemble, or in a blatently sexy manner? Fishnets were worn all the time in the forties and do have a certain playfulness about them. So, it really depends on what you wear with them as to whether it would be acceptable or not, I think.

It has been shown in recent studies, however, that women who dress to accentuate their sex appeal are looked upon as less competant. Sad, but true, folks.

How much do you care about what people think of you? That's the real question here. As you can see by all the posts, people definately have opinions about this, and pretty different views at that. You just have to ask yourself how much you care if someone has a negative opinion about your choice of hosery. There will be those who feel they are a definate 'no-no', you can't avoid that. You should now be able to judge if the social price is worth the freedom to express yourself. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, that's for you to decide.

Yes it is perfectly acceptable.

it's called "flair"...paired with a knee length pencil shkirt and a modest pair of slip on stilletoes...it is a very fashionable look
people who say "no" to fishnets are plain and boring...sorry not everyone like to wear control top pantyhose
so i say go for it...

I am currently at work in my office and am wearing a fabulous pair of burgundy fishnets. I'm not entirely sure that anybody has noticed yet, let alone cares. (I work in an office full of men who aren't exactly experts on sartorial matters!) I am wearing a knee length skirt though, which I think probably makes all the difference. With a mini skirt it might look tarty but knee length skirt and round toed shoes looks modern and individual. I think in business flaunting your femininity, individuality- and dare I say it- sex appeal, in a classy not too obvious way can actually do your favours- it certainly makes you stand out from the neck buttoned blouse, court-shoed majority (I think its kind of sad the amount of young girls I see dressing 20 years too old for them in a bid to appear "proffesional"). The first step to being noticed for promotion is surely standing out from the crowd, and whilst your brain power can carry you so far, why not give it a boost? I say if you've got the legs for it why not? Flash a bit of leg and a bit of personality, why wear a uniform your whole life?

I am right now!! If it's paired with an outfit not over the top then why wouldn't they be considered the same as any other kind of panty-hose - because they have holes. You also have to consider the different types of close knot vs. wide knit varities of fishnets. If you're asking the question you knoe you want to - so go ahead and do! None of us work with you, so why should our opinion sway your true instinct. You're a woman and you have legs - wear 'em!

This totally depends on your work place and your personal style. Just apply the rules that you would apply to the rest of your wardrobe. A pair of neutral colored fishnets paired with demure clothing and accesories can look quiet stylish rather than sexy. Just consider the overall look and you should be fine.

It would depend on the type of office. In a corporate setting, such as a bank or law office, it would probably be inappropriate and unprofessional to wear fishnet tights (unless you were wearing them underneath your slacks). However, in a less formal situation, such as an art or drama company, the dress codes could be a little more relaxed, and that type of attire, while it could be distracting, might be acceptable. To be on the safe side, I'd recommend saving the fishnet tights for social occasions such as bar-hopping or disco dancing.

It can be acceptable, but only under certain conditions: when paired with a knee-length skirt, and the fishnet tights ought to be in the same color family. If one were a bartender, then they might have more room to "push the envelope," so to speak- more vivid color might be acceptable. If one worked in a waitressing job where the uniforms were less, um, traditional, then yeah- fishnets would be cool. Of course, there is the ever-popular streetwalker profession. But hey, I don't wish to ffend any hookers out there. I mean, some people will only choose to settle for selling their bodies- and their souls, I daresay- for a few bucks. If they want to be like that, then that's their choice. The biggest deciding factor here is: what do you want people to think of you? If you are going to wear a certain item, you must- unfortunately- accept that people will think of you in a certain way as a result. Simple as that.

It is usually considered inappropriate in most offices. The reason is it may makes certain people uncomfortable. If people are uncomfortable, they can use it as an excuse to not do buisness with your company. In Pizza Hut, you can't even where a tongue ring. The only place I know fishnet tights would be allowed for work is hot topic.

All fishnets are not created equal. Fine gauge designer fishnet hosiery is a far cry from something you might pick up at a dollar store or flea market. And no, it's not about how much you spend - there is a vast difference in how it looks.

Moreover, has anyone noticed that in any many (if not most offices) it is now perfectly acceptable to go without pantyhose at all? How is being completely bare-legged less provocative than wearing something that provides (albeit minimal) coverage?

I remember reading John Malloy's book "Dress For Success" many years ago. A couple of things that stuck in my mind were: "Dress for the position you want, not the one you are in." and "The correct clothing never earned someone an undeserved promotion, but many times, incorrect clothing prevented a deserved promotion." I would keep those two quotes in mind when determining whether to wear fishnet stockings to work.

Where I work now, there is a dress-code in place, and I would be justified in sending an employee home to change if they wore fishnet stockings. Not saying that I would, but I could.

No it's unprofessional and you will be judged by your clothes rather than you capablities at work which yes, is a little unfair but is also understandable. If you want respect at work you should dress more professionally and it's not worth it to deal with any judgements or comments. It's just stockings wear them when you get off if you insist on it.

How to wash tights

As much as I hate cold weather I do love to wear tights. However, tights are one of the hardest things to wash because you have to take special care of them. First of all there is the debate of how often you should wash your tights. Some people wash them between each wear, and others barely ever wash them at all. For me, how often I wash them varies each time. I try to wash my tights after every few wears. Its not as simple as just throwing them in the washer though.
Sometimes I will wash a pair after only one or two wears if I am also washing other pairs that I have worn more often. It is easier and much less time consuming to just wash them all one after another than each one on separate days.
Washing tights and stockings can be nerve wracking because they are made of such a delicate material. While I try to not splurge too much on an article of clothing I know I could easily destroy the firs time I wear them, some of my tights were a little pricey and I am careful to keep them in good shape.
To safely wash your tights and not have to worry about tears and runs simple take each pair and individually soak them in a sink full of lukewarm water.
Now, add a laundry detergent that is both strong and gentle. Something made especially for delicates is ideal. Pour this into the sink and let your tights sit and soak in it for around a half hour.
Once your tights are completely soap and water logged, remove them from the sink and rinse them in cold water. Rinse until all the suds are gone.
Now, simple wring them nice and gently to remove as much water as possible. It's a good idea to remove any rings from your fingers that might catch on your tights and snag them. Also, be careful if you have long fingernails.
Hang your now clean tights in your shower or over a towel rack to dry.

If you really don't have time to hand wash you tights and stockings you can risk putting them in the washing machine. However, always put them inside a bag made especially for washing delicates, or a pillowcase if you don't have one.

Tights Buying Tips

Tights buying tips

by katyrose Posted on http://sparkleshelf.com

It’s time to bust out your tights. Or if you’re like me, it’s time to buy several new pairs for this cold season. But it’s not as easy and running to the local drug store and stocking up. Here’s the 101 on buying and wearing tights this season.

Thickness! This is the most difficult part when shopping. It’s important that your tights still look like tights (and not nylons) when they are stretched over your legs. When comparing pairs stretch the material in all directions. If you can see your hand or the cardboard through the layers the material is too thin.

Design! When going with the design or fishnet trends make sure the pattern runs evenly up your leg. Adjusting to make the design sit right is not worth the effort. (I bought a pair of designed fishnets a couple years ago and the pattern twisted on the left leg! It was horrible.)

Size! We women are infamous for buying smaller sizes just to have the personal satisfaction to know we are strutting out stuff in a smaller-than-usual size. But when it comes to tights that is a huge no-no. Buying too small will often mean the dreaded muffin top makes an appearance. GASP! Check the sizing information on the back of the package. If you are between sizes go for the bigger one.

Toes! If you are planning on sporting the peep-toe trend this season the top area of your tights is all-important. Stay away from reinforced toes which tend to be a different color in the toe section. Also check the toe stitching to make sure it is not a different color and that it can easily be hidden from view.

Boots! For those you plan to wear taller boots and hate the constricting toes of tights, look for a footless pair. As long as the ends are hidden in your boots, no one will know the difference and you’ll be more comfortable. Keep the same criteria for the design, size and thickness.

Take out your scissors! The part I hate most about wearing tights is that band that runs along the top that seems to exist only to cut off your air supply. The solution to that is easier than you make think. Take your scissors and snip a slit on the left and right side of this strip. DO NOT cut all the way through the band, but you can cut right up to it. The slits will make breathing easier and wearing more comfortable.

Layering! With all the different designs out there now layering your tights for a different visual effect can be smart. Match solid black tights under a colored fishnet.

Wash them! It’s tempting to throw them back into your drawer or into the washer with the rest of your load, but neither is smart. To make them last and keep their shape it’s smartest to hand wash them after each wearing.

TRENDY WAYS TO WEAR THE TIGHTS TREND
The more the merrier when it comes to covering our legs! (and a great way to hide those veins!). LAYERS!   Usually when I wear crotch-scrapers (mini-skirts or dresses) I turn to my old faithful thick black tights, but today colorful  tights and even Knee sox are warming the legs of women everywhere! -not to mention Over-The-Knee socks.  A trick I have seen women doing is wearing the over-the-knee sox with shorter boots to create the look of the thigh-high boot, without the price tag. -Theses photos are 2 looks I like--- I layered  FOOTLESS Diamond patterned fishnet tights over plain light- colored ones. Also, layered a pair of brown fishnet stockings over a pair of light pink tights. Both work great, but I liked the footless better for boots! --As a woman over 40- I stick to keeping my legs covered and especially when wearing a shorter skirt, I keep the tights very thick. This can still look trendy without being too overexposed!
TIPS to TRY!

**TIP**-WHEN U WEAR FISHNET STYLES OVER LEGGINGS, U CAN CHOOSE A FOOTLESS VERSION-I find mine at sears- THIS WAY YOUR BOOTS DON'T FEEL SO TIGHT OR CRAMPED**
*TIP*--wear short sox over bright tights  for a pop of style if u wear flats or mary-janes*
*TIP--wear knee sox over tights and under boots for a pop of color*
*TIP--wear knee sox darks over lighter color tights, and vise-versa*
*TIP--Layer 2 colors together to make a new color-like nail polish!*
*TIP--or combine all of the above and create a really special look!*
*TIP--add a transparent  'tattoo' style tight over a bright color*
*TIP--don't be afraid to show those "hosed" toes- it's no longer a no-no!*

How to wear coloured tights and DIY ripped tights video's

The best option is to match your shoes to your tights. This helps elongate and continue the line of the leg. This is especially true for petites, because a dress or skirt, colored tights, and then a different colored shoe, breaks the body up and makes you look shorter. The other option is to wear tall boots with a pair of colored tights (boots should be just below or at the knee). This option just shows a hint of the colored tights without breaking up the line of the body.

How to wear open toe shoes with tights

open

Another interesting article which seems to be good fashion advice, if your going to wear open toe or peep shoes with tights stick to dark colours and opaques. Personally i think wearing nude tights is fine with open toe shoes, just make sure you go with a sandal toe. Easy !

Navigating fashion dos & don'ts can often be tricky, especially when logic and reason play a role in your decision. While most of us know not to wear shorts in the winter or fleece in the summer, other questionable “rules” are less obvious with regards to right and wrong. Take high-heeled sandals and open toed shoes for instance. Can we really wear them year-round? The answer is yes, and here’s how.

Consider purchasing dark neutral tights, such as black or chocolate brown, as these colors are typically the easiest to work with.

When donning your tights, make sure to pull the toe seam to the very tip of your toes, or try to tuck it under the top of your foot if it’s comfortable to walk on.

When choosing a shoe to pair with your tights, opt for solid colors like black, brown, dark red, dark green or gray. Bring interest into the mix with textures, shapes, styles and height, rather than through patterns and intricate strapping.

Pairing like colors will work best, especially if you’re a novice to this trend. For instance, a black dress, black tights and black peep toes will look sleek, sophisticated and sexy, as would black tights, black shoes and a dark patterned dress.

When it comes to picking styles of shoes, chunky versions work best. Other options include open-toed sling backs with a thick heel, Mary Jane's, platform high-heels, and thick-strapped sandals (all open toed).

The final step is picking a skirt, dress, or dark jeans (knee high tights work best with pants) to display your new pairing. Patterns can come into play here, as can shorter dresses (the dark tights work the same way as leggings) and mini's.
